Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London) in London, was raised by the mother, her grandmother and her godparents. Her father was absent from her family. As a young child, Ford battled anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder caused through word-related associations. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. After being admitted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School for a short time but Ford realized it was not the right venue for her. Ford made an application at the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered a position on her fourth try. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however, by that time, she had already made her TV debut on the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". In the Nineties, Tate could be watched on television in programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. She worked on stage regularly and was a member of the company's season 2000-2001. Tate's stand-up comedy style, which she began adding to her set in 1996, soon gained the attention of her peers.
